Community Game Dev Experience
We are putting together a pilot group of 4 to 8 people to build a multiplayer game with us from zero, learn the craft along the way, and share the whole journey online as a reality series. Applications are open now. We will choose the group by December 1, 2026.
Apply with the short form. It takes about ten minutes: who you are, what you would like to work on, how much time you have, and whether you are up for being part of the series.
Apply to the pilot group
We read every application and reply to everyone. Shortlisted people get a short video call in November.
What this is
Garrack Gaming Studios made Salty with one person. The next project is the opposite: a small community studio where people who have never shipped a game build one together, in their spare time and for the love of it. You pick tasks from a shared board, say how you will do them, build them, and play the result with the team every week.
The pilot group is the founding team. You help decide what the game is, you learn the tools from zero, and you set the tone for everyone who joins after you.
The honest version
- This is unpaid. We are a community project, not an employer. Nobody is paid, including the person running it. If the game ever earns money, the team talks about that openly together, but please do not join expecting it.
- Experience is optional. Attitude is not. We take people who are new to game development if they bring a positive attitude, show up when they say they will, and want to learn. We are happy to teach.
- Cameras are part of it. The pilot group is the cast of a reality series about building a game from nothing. Members record short updates about their own experience, and planning sessions and playtests are recorded. The recordings are about the work, the wins and the stumbles. You decide what you share about your own life, and we agree on all of it in writing before you start.
- Your time is yours. Pick the tasks you like, hold a few at once, drop them when life happens. We ask for a few hours a week and one planning or playtest session.
- We are selective. A small team works best when everyone pulls in the same direction. We say yes to people who fit, and we say so kindly when it is not a match.
Who we are looking for
- Programmers and would-be programmers. Gameplay, networking, tools. We build in Unity 6, and beginners start in a sandbox project of their own.
- Artists. Concept, 3D, animation, UI. Blender and whatever you already draw in.
- Sound and music. Effects, ambience, a theme.
- Writers and designers. Level ideas, systems, the words players read.
- Organisers. Someone who likes keeping a group on track and a calendar honest.
- Creators. If you already make videos or stream, the series side of this will feel like home.
How it works, week to week
- A shared task board. Open tasks are grouped by role. You claim one, write a short plan, get a quick answer, build it.
- Weekly playtest. One evening a week the team plays the latest build together over a video call.
- Planning sessions. Short, recorded, and where the big decisions get made as a group.
- Credit that is tracked. Every delivered task earns points that are recorded per person and per project, in the open.
Timeline
- Now to late November: applications open, short video calls with shortlisted people.
- By December 1, 2026: the pilot group is chosen and everyone hears back.
- December: accounts, tools and a first planning session together.
- January: the first tasks, the first playtest, and the first episode.
Questions
Do I need to be on camera?
Pilot members are part of the series, so yes, to a degree you are comfortable with. Short updates about your work and recorded group sessions are the core of it. You never have to share anything about your personal life. If you would rather build without the cameras, say so on the form; there may be room for that too, after the pilot.
Where in the world do I need to be?
Anywhere with a stable internet connection. Sessions are scheduled in North American evenings for now, and we will adjust once we know where the group is.
What does it cost?
Nothing. The tools we use are free for individuals. You need a PC that can run a modern game engine if you want to code or build content.
Who owns what we make?
The studio holds the project so it can ship it, and every contributor's share is tracked by the points they earn. You keep anything you owned before you joined. The full agreement is shared with the pilot group before anyone signs anything.
What if I apply and do not get picked for the pilot?
We reply to everyone, and we keep applications on file. The pilot is the first group, not the only one.
